Season 1, 9th or 10th episode. When Patrick helps that guy to get out of jail, the guy runs away, goes to mexico and gets killed by red john. The guy wrote on the wall "He is Mar...", leaving Ellis Mars as the only one with name beginning with "Mar".

I believe Ellis Mars is Red John. Although there are many reasons to suspect Ellis Mars, a few specific ones stand out at me. First, Lorelei Martins sais she is surprised that Jane didn't become friends with him the second they shook hands. We all know that Patrick used to be a "Psychic" and Ellis Mars too believed himself to be a "Psychic". This is a perfect reason for Lorelei to think they would become friends. Next, Ellis Mars does not have the personality of a killer, but as we know Red John is very intelligent and will know how to put on an act. I personally do not believe that Red John will be a character who is very involved in the show, such as Lisbon, Cho, or Vanpelt. I think he will be someone who plays a high role in one episode of the show and then will return in an early episode of this upcoming season. Although there may not be much evidence supporting this theory, i don't think the creators of the Mentalist want us to know who Red John is until the last season, i don't think it will be to obvious. Many people suspect Brett Partridge, but i do not believe it is him simply because he seems to be too young.Red John has been killing people for up to 15 years, and Brett Partridge does not look to be any older than 28. No matter who Red John is, i can't wait to find out, and i'm looking forward to the next season.

Red John is a showman and would have put on an act or facade when he first met Patrick and 'supposedly' shook his hand.......It's all about the performance for Red John...remember Tommy Volker's idiot performance in season 1....The same is with Ellis Mars....He pretended to be a psychic just like Patrick and made it look like he was being manipulated by Patrick for the entire episode, Now that is a performance................It would be a bit boring and predictable to cast Brett Partridge , Stiles or Kirkland as Red John, They have the potential to be Red John but most of the viewers want shock and awe in the series final episodes in the revealing of Red John's identity........After years of anticipation, wouldn't it be a letdown if Red John is an obvious choice like Stiles or Bertram.....If Red John is Kirkland, I would blame the writers of laziness and taking the easy way out........My favorites 2 candidates to put shock and awe to the viewers are Ellis Mars and Walter Mashburn.....yes...that Walter Mashburn.....plus there is also the clue 'He is Mar' which could be indicative of these 2

I have a theory...

Lorelei is a key.
Either Lorelei Martins is alive, or she has an twin/look alike which read a script to Jane at the final of season 5. 
Nobody from a Patrick Jane "7 people list" is Red John, but 
[almost all/all] of them are his close accomplices.
Kirkland is one of them, and Jane knew that from the start, so he easily manipulated him by placing toothpick, and letting him steal fake information of 7 NAMES which Kirkland updated Red John with later on (RED LETTER DAY) 
Patrick made a fake info of 7 names, and "gave" them to Red John, so he could think that he is a step ahead of Jane. 
Jane is mastermind, he would never leave evindence of names behind him, so instead of that he used that same evidence against Red John by giving him an "illusion" of step ahead.
But Red John is not step ahead.
Jane is step ahead of him, and his accomplices now, leading them all by fake proofs, evidence and "illusion". He tricked RJ into making video, made him think that he is on Jane's level of thinking which he is not on, even if he is a mastermind criminal.

My pick still ELLIS MARS which everyone forgot about, that "too kind" psyhic, who appeared to protect his identity. I have many theories on him but we shall see if I'am right.

I thought of this theory from my point of view because this is what I would do, and I'm sure it would be genius way to get a great twist. Just a theory tho. =)

Well we all know that there will be 7 suspect revealed...and shortly I would like to guess these 7 names:

-Osvaldo Ardilles
-Brett Pattridge
-Gale Bertram
-Robert Kirkland
-Ellis Mars
-Ray Haffner
-Walter Mashburn

Ardilless:
he is not really so much interesting, he is just a lawyer. But there are two reasons why I choose him: Cut Iron->In Court and a very special hint from the writers, that we should look for the anagrams, and Red sails in the sunset is an anagram for Hunt Ardilles,its seen.

Brett Pattridge:
He fits all the descriptions and is very known for investigating Red John cases. He appeared in the Pilot and in the finale of season 2. I wouldn't bet for him being RJ, but it's possible, since he and Jane hate each other and for the mirror scene in Red Sky in The Morning.

Gale Bertram:
We all know who he is but I believe most of you don't believe he is RJ because of Poker. I agree. but the most important thing, which I believe shouldn't be forgotten is:-He cares a lot about media(LIKE RED JOHN?) and the most interesting scene in the series : season 3 finale. when Jane meets him at the Mall, Jane, Gale, Rigsby and Cho are the only ones that know they will meet there. so how would RJ know that? Gale is RJ... Red John had to guide Jane to solve the puzzle, so he said at the end of the rope...interesting? yeah

Ellis Mars:
My personal guess because of the psychic thingy. The show writer said that the season 5 finale will turn the hunt for Red John in a new way and since it's at a carnival it's completely logical, since Mars is a psychic. Weird scene was, when he knew about Jane's tragedy and Tiger burning bright "card". it's either he is red john or he is accually a psychic, which is less possible.

Bob Kirkland:
Many people ruled him out since the hunt scene, where its shown that he has a same board as Jane, but bigger. There are 2 options:Either he is hunting Red John, either he is Red John and has a such desk for Jane. I would believe he was RJ if writers wouldn't make it so obvious.

Ray Haffner:
Interesting since Red Barn, but i would like to mention the fact, that he admited that Jane is smarter than him...RJ wouldn't.

Walter Mashburn:
He is "friends" with Jane and a former lover with Lisbon. it would be interesting seeing him being RJ and telling that him and Lisbon had sex, but he doesn't really fit the smart guy appearance. he is just rich.

everytime a knew RJ fact comes out i get more confused ;/
