Although I think Bret Stiles is the mastermind behind the whole red john thing, I believe RAY HAFFNER is doing the dirty work for him. They do have the connection with Ray being a member of visualize. Ray fits all of "Red John's" characteristics and is very capable of pulling off all the murders. Stiles is probably the smartest out of all the suspects and the only one smart enough to outsmart Jane. He is quite similar to Jane. It seems like Stiles is also fond of Jane sort of like Red John. Jane once said that Stiles "wouldn't hurt a fly" which is why he probably had someone like Ray do everything for him. Heck maybe Ray is Stiles son. Stiles has all of Red John's mental characteristics (including brainwashing people) and Ray has all the physical characteristics of Red John. I also think Ray likes Lisbon, which is why he didn't hurt her. Those feelings might become a problem later on between Stiles and Ray.
