Who is Red John?

Theories of Whome (18)

So many people still expecting the show to somehow erase the damage done by the 10 or so episodes this season.  They eagerly wait for a dream sequence, a coma, or another sort of deus ex machina trick to forgive all.

Well, here is how you will know what happens next in the show.  All you need is to understand two things:

First, it is easy to hook the audience with wild clues that are all over the map, if you have no idea what the ending is going to be like.  If you have no clue, and especially no desire to tie things up at the end, you can make things up as you go along because there really is nothing holding you back.  Furthermore, each new twist or "clue" only makes the show that much more exciting.  There are many examples of this from the X Files to the Lost.

Second, you must realize that the Mentalist has been copying other shows, notably Profiler and Dexter, pretty liberally and literally:

1) In Dexter, two main characters are a blonde male (Dexter) and a dark-haired, non-traditionally beautiful woman (his sister Deb).  The Mentalist has the same characters, in physical appearance, in PJ and Lisbon.

2) In Dexter, a character says: "there is a storm coming your way."  In Mentalist, this becomes, "there is a comeuppance headed (PJ's) way."  Not only this but even the timing of the above sentence are almost identical in the final sequence of the episodes.

3) In Dexter, Deb gets attacked from behind and gets pulled down.  In the Mentalist, Lisbon suffers this attack.  If you watch the clip, I guarantee your jaw will drop and you will end up muttering a few choice profanities at the Mentalist.  If you are interested, it is Dexter's season 7, episode 3, named "Buck The System."  Just watch from 49-51 minutes in the show.

4) In Dexter, a woman comes on the show out of nowhere when Dexter seems to be in most trouble.  While she appears to be an adversary, she proves to be helpful to Dexter and she paves the way for the show's finale.  In the Mentalist, this plot is copied almost identically and carried out by Lorelei Martins.

5) Dexter is a bad (good) guy.  So, the series ending cannot be copied directly.  Here, the great writers of the Mentalist turn to Profiler and copy the exact disclosure of the villain: a small town sheriff is the bad guy.  (See the first point above about not caring to tie all the past clues.)

So, how do you know what will happen next in the show?  Well, it is going to be just like your other favorite show, of course!  The one that is on cable now or the one that was canceled a few years ago!

So long, the Mentalist!

Anyone hoping for the show to get back to its earlier quality is now in utter disappointment.  Episodes 9 and 10 made sure of that.  It was like watching snails move.  Any decent writer could bring PJ back to working with FBI in under 30 minutes.  They spent two awfully slow hours to accomplish that.  I won't be surprised if they waste the next show with drama around PJ refusing a few couches they get for him untll he chooses one with a pigeon design.

Producers know that too.  That is why have been paying sites like spoiler-tv for glowing reviews.  And Mentalist has been in the main news page of Yahoo every other day now with made-up, slightly different articles just to keep attention going on:  Look PJ got his man, look he is vacationing, look at his tan, look he is now a pigeon farmer, etc.

It is just not fun to watch anymore.  It is quite worse than a dozen other similar shows now.  Take, for instance, the murder plot in the last episode.  PJ solves it by noting that the mounds of
fertilizer were not needed because of the season.  Well, it turns out,
it was not the guy who got fertilizer there in the first place.  Again, major plot hole.

So, no more watching this show anymore.

Another big steal from Dexter and a follow up to:

The (in)famous smiley face is also from from Dexter.  In Mentalist, it is in red, and only slightly differently.

A lo of people have noted how the ending is copied from Profiler.  If you watch  Dexter, you will see even more examples of copying.  There are so many, it is ridiculous.  For example, in one of the last episodes, you hear, "There is a storm coming your way".  Mentalist copies that by changing it to "There is a comeuppance coming your way."  The last season in Dexter, an old lady doctor is introduced who paves the way to the season finale.  In Mentalist, Lorelai is introduced, who plays a critical role for PJ to come up with his list.  And so on and so on.

So, what does that say about Heller as a writer?  A second-grade copy-cat?  Is it even possible that the season was rushed because he had no other show to steal ideas from?  I think it seems pathetic.

Van Pelt's exit from the show.  Interesting comments that validate the (lack of) quality of this season:

This whole season has been one big waste of a filler.  With the exception of the first few shows which were regular, non-RJ shows, the rest has been one big empty nothing.  All of those episodes could have been combined into a single one, with time to spare if the writing was decent.

In the finale, nothing is answered except for the bomb in PJ's house.  That again begs more questions than answers: a concussion bomb, followed by a real one.  Is the sheriff wearing blue magical socks that protect him from being knocked out?  That he has time to pull Bertram and PJ out of the harm's way?

Idiots, all around.  He saves PJ only to try to kill him by scheduling a meeting?  Double idiots, double round.
