Who is Red John?

Theories of Redjohn45 (23)

Haffner likes to appear as if he's someone important, a kind of a tough guy full of himself  -- and yet turns out he's afraid of a little spider.   BUT that doesn't mean that Red John is ARACHNOPHOBIC [because Haffner is probably not Red John]

McAllister walks rooftops, shoots anything with a face -- and yet flinches when a bird suddenly flies by --- AND that doesn't mean RJ is ORNITHOPHOBIC either [because McAllister is likely not Red John either]

Anything POINTED out to us [instead of revealed in a way that makes sense to the story] is probably not important as a clue, but more something we can use in process of elimination

AND --- NICK NORDELLA, who is apparently playing the younger version of "someone" coming up [supposedly Haffner or McAllister] -- is ALSO being POINTED OUT to us.

SO, the FACT that we KNOW this information already -- and we haven't even seen the episode?  HE'S NOT RJ.  But more likely, he knows him or comes across him somehow.

JANE KNEW HE'D HAVE TO PROVIDE SOME KIND OF LIST OF SUSPECTS before he actually did: as he got closer to RJ -- everyone, including Lisbon and CBI team, FBI and Homeland, and even RJ himself  -- would want to know what Jane knows.  SO, Jane HAD to give something, but does ANYONE really think Jane is going just hand IT over like that?

1) FIRST FAKE LIST: that Jane left for who was spying on him [Kirkland] was a bunch of low life scum that were likely continuing their same heinous crimes, so Jane had a clear conscious about setting these men up should someone try to harm them. Do ANY of us care that the pedophile from last episode lost his finger? No, I think we're only sad Kirkland let him live.

2) SECOND FAKE LIST:  [of 7 supposed suspects] -- Jane corroborating with Lisbon & team so cooperatively makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and I think everyone who loves this show knows that.  Thus, in order to save myself from feeling gypped by the current writing of Jane's uncharacteristic behavior, we have to look beyond what we've been told, which is really just what we've been led to believe.  Therefore:

3) I think Jane is "playing along" with the list of 7 -- because like his first list, the suspects are likely all involved in corruption,
anyway. So, if Lisbon investigates them, it's a win-win because these guys need to be exposed.

In a way, you could say: NO LIST IS actually FAKE -- as both lists have very bad criminals on it who need to come to justice.  They are REAL lists in a sense -- and COULD lead to RJ somehow -- even though I think PJ knows RJ's real name is not actually on it.

JANE KEEPS HIS REAL LIST IN HIS HEAD
- because he trusts only himself.
He's ALWAYS been this way:  why would he change now?

JANE WILL REVEAL RED JOHN when RED JOHN REVEALS HIMSELF -- THROUGH the TRAP JANE SETS FOR HIM.
[So, I have to wonder, is the LIST a part of the trap?]

WHERE DOES HELLER SAY THAT RED JOHN is DEFINITELY ON THE LIST OF 7?!  I have only read that Heller has said, "You can trust the list."  Trusting the list doesn't have to mean RJ is ON IT...

HOW EASY WOULD IT BE FOR JANE TO JUST BRING ROSALIND HARKER TO EACH PERSON ON THE LIST?  Jane brought her to feel the face of Timothy Carter -- why not the rest of his "suspects?"  Jane loves to see reactions -- wouldn't one of these 7 guys have a reaction to Harker if they were RJ?  Certainly, Jane could tell.  And, if HARKER could feel each suspects face and hair -- wouldn't she KNOW?  Process of elimination would be a piece of cake!  This is just TOO TOO easy -- SO, if RJ IS on this supposed list, then this show has really bad writing and insults our intelligence.

MORE REASONS RJ IS NOT ON THIS LIST of 7:  To begin with:  4 SUSPECTS on the "LIST" DON'T EVEN FIT PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION OF RJ  -- unless, some speculate, Harker and Miller are lying [even though they have no reason not to]; it's bad writing to set us up with an expected physical description and then not deliver on it.  AND WHO THINKS JANE WOULDN'T NOTICE THIS? SERIOUSLY, the level of obviousness here is ridiculous.  Plain common sense tells you that:

1)  BRET STILES: TOO SHORT [5'9"] and TOO OLD -- [born 1943] -- he's 70 years old!  He's not RJ

2)  REEDE SMITH: TOO TALL [6'3"] [RJ is "just under 6'0"] and TOO YOUNG [born 1976] and TOO BIG -- he's "husky," and can ONLY be described as having large build, not to mention he's a bull in a china shop.  He's not RJ

3) GALE BERTRAM: AGAIN --- TOO TALL [6'3"] and BALDING -- what little hair he has would be described as nearly buzzed.  He's not RJ

4) THOMAS MCALLISTER:  BALDING with close cut hair, and TOO OLD [born 1955] [Patrick Jane is born 1969] -- more likely that RJ would be born 1960 to 1970 ALSO]  Also -- prone to FACIAL HAIR -- He's not RJ

5) BOB KIRKLAND:  DEAD.  He's not RJ

Only TWO MEN on the list fit the description:  BUT THEY are also NOT RJ because:

6)  BRETT PARTRIDGE:  is DEAD [though suspected alive -- which makes no sense unless he's got a TWIN, too!] He's a RED HERRING -- and the "Brace of Partridge" is about birds bound and dead, which is what BP is.  So, He's not RJ -- AND I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT IF HE DOES TURN OUT TO BE RJ IN THE END, IT'S JUST BAD BAD WRITING [which I don't want to believe] -- because again, JANE could've had ROSALIND HARKER meet BP.

SO THAT LEAVES:

7)  RAY HAFFNER:  who is now a favored suspect due to new "whistling" revelation [that was handed to us on a platter] -- BUT he is NOT RJ because:

        1)   If Haffner was Red John, would he REALLY let Jane get away with what Jane did to him in "Little Red Book" episode?  [No way RJ would allow that unless he was playing a role with Jane -- letting Jane THINK he had gotten the best of him]

        2)   Haffner can't compete with Jane's abilities -- he's just not as clever!  AMBITIOUS, yes.  Clever, no.   [While RJ prides himself in being CLEVER]

3) Haffner had to be pissed at Jane for embarrassing him  -- BUT Haffner took it in strideI'm sure that Haffner would like to see Jane get his but he's patient, confident and probably believes "all in good time" type of revenge -- [WHEREAS; RJ would be mortally offended and require IMMEDIATE punishment].

4Some posts say that Haffner is RJ because he "likes Lisbon" [therefore he didn't kill her].  BUT Haffner liking Lisbon is exactly why he's NOT RJ.  Red John doesn't care about Lisbon, Red John LOVES Patrick!   Even BRET STILES tells Jane:  RJ has "a kind of love" for you.  AND, RJ kills the SHOW of it -- for the person who is GOING to FIND the murders, which right now is mainly PJ.  Painting LIbson's face was theatrical /symbolic [In RJ's mind] and RJ knows Jane loves Lisbon -- so RJ showed his power to psychologically mess with Jane.  Plus, he didn't need to kill Lisbon, he punished Jane and Lisbon with Partridge's death.  RJ probably considers himself a merciful gentleman.

        5)  Haffner is good looking, confident and pretty comfortable with the opposite sex.   [Jane said RJ is:"an ugly, tormented little man, a lonely soul, sad, very sad."]  Serial killers are average, seemingly normal and easy to overlook -- that is usually apart of the psychosis, a lack of a a feeling of personal power, going along invisible in life.  They don't usually have Haffner's rooster strut.  Haffner, in contrast, was a troubled youth who turned himself around with new-agey psycho-babble.  It just doesn't match up.

Could Haffner be corrupt? YEAH,  A killer?  SURE,  Could he know RJ?  IT'S POSSIBLE, but HE is not RJ

MOST LIKELY:  Haffner is connected to Tiger Tiger:  WHICH LEADS ME…BACK TO REAL PURPOSE OF LIST OF 7: which is probably to REVEAL those involved with Tiger Tiger!!

     1) The FAKE LIST JANE LEFT FOR his spies [KIRKLAND] had the names of low life scum on it, and Jane knew they could get hurt but he figured no loss, they're criminals who will continue to commit crimes, anyway.

AND LIKEWISE:

     2)  The "LIST of 7" is probably composed of men who JANE believes are corrupt law enforcement agents involved in something fishy --- and he lets Lisbon and team in on it because he wants these men investigated and EXPOSED.  Lisbon should have been highly suspicious of Jane sharing his "real list" with her so easily BUT exposing the the secrets of these guys might also lead to RJ.  JANE is trying to flush them out like rats.

Jane saying that "five people left on the list is manageable"   I'm thinking --- C'mon, Jane is MUCH SMARTER THAN THAT.  Because he knows these guys are NOT RJ but they are corrupt anyway.

ALSO:  what if RJ wants to see those 7 names out of his way because they are his FOES -- because they all want RJ, the ultimate big fish to catch.  I think Red John wants Patrick to help stop these men who are trying to destroy him.

As for Jane's REAL LIST:  I think it's either the 10 names in BLACK CHERRY or one that we haven't seen yet, perhaps including some of the names we know.

WE'VE BEEN DISTRACTED from the real identity of Red John, as well as who he's killed -- LED TO BELIEVE THE OPPOSITE of what's true, LIKE:

We've been led to believe:   Red John has powerful friends who carry out his orders and he's responsible for killing many [some who are also his minions]
Now, we know some people we thought were killed by RJ were really killed by the Tiger Tiger organization [OR another person with different motivations].

JASON LENNON killed by Kirkland, not FOR RJ -- but to FIND RJ.

TODD JOHNSON believed to be killed by RJ minions but it was obviously Tiger Tiger that killed him because Todd had knowledge of the corrupt organization, saying their name, and he had to be stopped, lest he threaten TT.  Nothing to do with RJ.   Have to wonder same thing about BRETT PARTRIDGE?

REBECCA ANDERSEN could have been killed by TT, too.  BECAUSE once a person admits they are associated to RJ:  they are also fair game for TT.

AND -- I definitely think RJ has far fewer friends than we're led to believe -- again, because it's clear that we've assumed a lot about RJ that was probably the Tiger Tiger network --- which takes suspects off the RJ list, considering they're more likely to be on the TT list.  The question is:  could RJ be in TT?  Or is he like I think -- an outsider of TT.

I also have to wonder IF and to what extent Tiger Tiger could be using Red John to try and catch Red John.  Well, only Red John could know.

CROKUS9 posted a comment to my THEORY #6535 and made an extremely good point:

"And to add to your theory.. It was a Mexican prostitute who wrote " he is mar" on the wall..If Jared Renfrew told her to write it, he would have said "ellis mars" and to a spanish speaking person, Ellis Mars sounds like "el es mars" which means "he is mars"

Also:  the Mexican prostitute must have written is as she was facing the tile and Renfrew was not in position to have written it.

WE HAVE BEEN SEDUCED INTO THINKING THAT RJ IS SOMEONE WITH THE WORLD AT HIS FINGERTIPS.

It would be an easy MISTAKE:

to confuse that RJ seeks power --- with thinking that RJ is someone in a position of power

It's easy to imagine RJ as a cult leader, rich playboy, CBI insider, etc. -- BUT the truth about killers like RJ is that they are often unremarkable and overlooked, and subsequently in deep need of power.  Remember SJK Killer?  A total nerd, seemingly harmless and pretending to help out.  And real life BTK?  He didn't fit the image at all.  THAT'S the paradox.  They want power but they are NOT going to look like they have any.

THIS OMITS everyone on the List of 7 Suspects [that was fake anyway], as well as any other obviously powerful or arrogant person that Jane has come into contact with.

A good question to ask:  WHO DOESN'T HOLD an obvious powerful position, who has been dismissed or overlooked by CBI [though not entirely discounted] -- and who we've seen to be both forgettable AND yet someone who needs to be heard?

ELL-IS-MARS

"EL" means HE in Spanish.  So....ELL or  HE  --  IS  --- MAR:       HE IS MARS

Am I disappointed?  Yes, I am.

To think Ellis Mars is Red John seems fairly anti-climactic.  It is MUCH MORE FUN to think that Red John is a powerful Cult Leader and/or one of his minions, a stinking rich Socialite Playboy, a backwoods Sheriff, a CBI, FBI or Homeland Security insider, a creepy forensics Guy who has faked his own death LOL....and my personal favorite:  Jane's father or some long lost brother/rival from the old carnival days -- not to mention Jane himself!!

1.   And despite my disappointment, in many ways it makes PERFECT SENSE that Ellis Mars is Red John.  WHO really suspects him?  NO ONE!  There are only TWELVE other accusations of him on this website LOL!!  Because he acts like a bumbling buffoon parading around as an "astrologer" and "psychic" -- NO ONE TAKES that seriously.  What MORE perfect way to go undetected?  Plus, these types of killers are often very unremarkable -- and look and seem pathetic or normal, going easily undetected throughout their lives, amongst society.  BUT, they long to be someone.

2.  Which is why Jane tells that serial killers like to get involved in their own investigations in some way, or as helpers, as did the very unremarkable SJK killer.  Remember that Ellis Mars popped up out of nowhere offering his services.

3.  Mars is also the right age -- actor "JOHN" Billingsly was born in 1960 -- which makes it easy for RJ to have killed in the 80's and on...putting RJ around the ages of 45-55.

4.  Ellis Mars definitely fits the physical description, and has the right kind of style, a sort of professorly appearance and having a great appreciation for the finer things in life, particularly literature and poetry.

5.  "I forgive your brusqueness. I can tell that you have been visited by great tragedy."―Ellis Mars to Patrick Jane.  How much of a thrill must it have given Mars to say this if he was the killer?

The one question about Mars -- is wondering how someone like him in looks and demeanor could make people follow him or fall for him, like Lorelei -- but if in truth, Ellis Mars is smarter, craftier and talented in hypnosis, mind games and manipulation, WHY NOT?  You cannot fully know how attractive someone is until you know their full essence and inner attributes.  RJ always preys upon those who are lonely, lost, empty and in need of someone who KNOWS THINGS.

I think Ellis Mars successfully hid his true nature in "Red Moon"  and setting Jane up to write him off as a pathetic con man, which is perfect!  HOW smart and clever would RJ himself if he already got Patrick Jane to dismiss him long long ago?    And what's more, Jane has  BLIND spot to "PSYCHICS" -- he is both drawn to and repulsed by those who claim such a gift.  Look at his relationship to FRYE.  He NEEDS to either be FASCINATED with or have the ability to PUT DOWN anyone claiming to be psychic because of his own internal block about having been one, using those powers and what it cost him.  Jane may really be psychic, but he could never afford to be again, since he thinks it cost him his family.

Yes, truly sick that RJ would kill PJ's family because of PJ's psychic opinion -- only then to meet PJ in personal, claiming to be a the very thing that got PJ in trouble.

Yeah, my money is on Ellis Mars.
