Who is Red John?

Theories of Ex-Fan (6)

Finally forced myself to watch the finale on the web.

What a cheesy, disappointing, totally out of original Mentalist character ending.  :-(

The only upside is that all of us original fans (seasons 1-3) have been finally put out of our misery.

Just finished watching the Silver Briefcase on the CBS website.

Have to admit it was the best episode of season 7, but the fact I watched it on the CBS website is shows just how far this show has gone downhill for me.

There was a time I couldn't wait for The Mentalist to come on tv, now it's just meh, I'll catch it whenever there's time to kill during the week.

Honestly I don't care what happens now, the sooner the series ends, the better.

So why do I even watch it?  I guess it's like watching a train wreck in slow motion, I already know nothing good can happen but I still can't look away.

I see from the comments, some people are still holding out for a coherent RJ wrap up.  That's ok, I really do understand your delusion, denial always comes before the first step to recovery. :-)

On a more merciful note, only a few more episodes left before we can all finally forget about what might have been and reluctantly accept the hidden pocket pigeon meets Lost reality of Heller.

Well, the finale wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Have to admit that I didn't see the fake letter coming.  On the other hand it certainly wasn't good enough to hook me for season 7.

The best line of the whole episode was of course Cho's cat comment.

Sadly (for me), the direction of the final season will obviously be geared towards Jisbon.  The woman on the plane ironically summed it up with "Every woman on this plane is green with envy".

That's nice, but I'm a guy and that has watched every episode from season 1 episode 1, all it did was make me green with nausea.

I'm moving on to The Arrow and The Flash this fall. They're not murder mysteries, but the writers on The Arrow have successfully demonstrated how to plan and execute story arcs that are complex yet resolve in a manner that actually makes sense.

I'll probably drop by this site occasionally to see if there are any RJ hopefuls still clinging to life support.  However, I've officially pulled the plug on my hope.

Thanks to everybody who posted theories that made sense (obviously Heller didn't post them) and the person who created this site for the original hardcore fans.

To all the shippers, enjoy your new procedural soap opera.  No hard feelings, you people didn't kill this show, it was Heller who gave all of us original fans the finger by refusing to tie all the important clues together in the Red John reveal parody.

From Heller's most recent interview, it's clear the RJ story line and any explanations to tie things together simply isn't going to happen.

He's only throwing bait to the original Mentalist fans (e.g. Lisbon in a red dress final episode, 3 dots on coffee table, etc.) to keep them watching, but he has repeatedly stated the RJ plot holes will NEVER be filled.

He has shifted gears to retarget the show to the Johnny Come Lately audience who were not part of the original audience and who bought into the idiotic reboot because they're not even aware of the orignal clues.

All that CBS cares about now is will the original viewers swallow the bait so they can fill the time Sunday slot without taking a risk on a new show.

To Heller's credit, he's given fair warning that the RJ arc is truly finished. So if we continue watching, we have nobody to blame but ourselves.

I for one will watch the season finale, but for me it's the end of the road. Season 7 is non-issue for me, I'd rather walk the dog.

The reboot was a yawn fest knowing that Heller will NEVER resolve nor explain the RJ arc. I'm a guy not a middle aged woman, so Jisbon, meh, whatever.

The cheesy Casablanca ripoff teaser for next week is almost naueseating to watch. It looks like a parody of a classic.

Like someone else already said, I can't believed they renewed this train wreck.

Anyway, time for me to move on to something else and it certainly won't be Gotham. I actually like Batman and would hate to have Heller make me despise the character.

Having read the synopsis for episode 6.21 where Jane finally faces the consequences for killing RJ, wouldn't it be interesting if those consequences were from killing Timothy Carter, NOT McAllister.

What I mean by that is this:

Most hard core fans who watched the show from the beginning seem to be in agreement that Timothy Carter made a great Red John and had the series ended in the mall with Jane killing Carter, a lot of questions would have remained unanswered, but it still would have made sense since Carter fit all the clues to that point.

Conversely, those same fans seem to be in agreement that revealing McAllister as the real Red John was lame at best because the same questions still were unanswered and he fit very few of the clues from earlier seasons. It simply didn't make sense on any level.

So what if Jane was in a coma ... not from the explosion in season 6 but in rather in a coma from some sort of beatdown (or something equally traumatic) that happened when he went into custody after the mall scene at the end of season 3 before his absurd acquittal in the first episode of season 4?

If that were the case it could plausibly explain the idiotic and unrealistic events that happened every now and then in the series from seasons 4 to 6, since the longer Jane is in a coma the more fantasy like his reality becomes.

So in essence what has happened between season 4 episode 1 and now has been in Jane's dream world as he becomes more out of touch with reality with the passing of time. Maybe Carter was the real RJ, maybe not.  If he wasn't, then maybe (and I'm probably giving Heller way too much creative credit here), Jane has been subconsciously putting the pieces together while in his coma and the clues that we see as totally unbelievable in the real world are just symbolic in meaning.

The real meanings and how they tie everything together will be revealed when Jane finally has his real day in court for the crime he committed at the end of season 3.

I realize this is hail Mary theory in hopes that the series doesn't crash and burn in total suckdom. I really don't care who RJ is (even it was McAllister) as long as it's explained and actually fits the clues given since the beginning.

Anyway, hope that made sense.

Wow, I don't think I've ever watched a show before that jumps the shark every week. :-(

Typically a show jumps the shark once and then dies a quick death into oblivion whereas The Mentalist becomes magnitudes worse with every passing week.

It's almost like Heller is making a concerted effort do undo every bit of awesomeness the show once was.

The one positive outcome for me though is I know not to waste any time on Heller's new Gotham already knowing it will start off with a bang and then eventually degenerate into total suckdom.

I was huge Mentalist fan since season 1 (episode 1) but lost my enthusiasm after Jane's ridiculous acquittal in season 4 (episode 1), but kept hoping it would turn around and recapture what it once was. Of course it never did.

If the show had been canceled after season 3, it could have ended on the perfect high note and we could have all kept our happy memories of what had been a truly fantastic show. Now it's just painful (almost insulting) to watch, but I will watch it to the end of this season and ride the stock to the bottom (I'm sure it can get worse, Heller's proven that) because of all the time I invested.  Hopefully CBS will put it out of everybody's misery and not renew it.

I gave away my Season 1 DVD set to a friend so he could experience what a great show it once was. If I can find my season 2 DVDs I'll give those away as well.

Thankfully I never bought the other seasons, nor would I now.

If anybody visiting this site has never seen the earlier episodes, just watch the first 3 seasons and view the remaining seasons as a very, very bad dream that never happened.
