I think Red John is Bret Stiles and his followers have the tattoo. He's attacking more because he hasn't got long to live now. He's killing more to help Patrick find him, but when he does finally find him he would of died naturally and Patrick won't like it because he didn't kill him and Red John was always one step ahead and never found out why e started killing.
