Imagine that we see patrick wake up one day in the mental institution that we are told he was in for a year after his wife and child were murdered, and it was all in his mind. he was just some whack job that they found, he had no name and they called him john doe. the walls in his room were painted red, therefore his subcontious made up the name red john in his dream. there never was a red john, he never had a wife and kids, he was just a loony.
