A few episodes before that, laurali tells jane that she is suprised he and red john didn't become friwnds the moment they shook hands and that red john is just like jane.when you look back at the episode where we are introduced to one sight Bret asks jane "Do you know who i am" and they shake hands. When you think about it, Bret is very similar to jane in terms of personality.
