Who is Red John?

CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM TvGuide (newest):

" . . . but I've seen the penultimate hour of the current "Red John" arc on CBS's The Mentalist
(10/9c), which is quite eventful. With only one episode left until the
actual reveal and face-to-face showdown between the serial-killer fiend
and the vengeful Patrick Jane (Simon Baker),
it's fair to say that the list of suspects is narrowed considerably in
the wake of the explosion at Jane's house. The CBI team is in "do not
trust anyone in law enforcement" mode, as it becomes more clear just how
widespread the "Tiger Tiger" conspiracy is. There's plenty of action,
and another climactic reversal that leaves Jane and us praying for an
end to this ordeal. Unless there's another aggravating football overrun
next week to pre-empt the big reveal, we're all about to get our answer
and some much-needed closure."

So, we need to brace ourselves: things may not appear as they really are, at first!

I have an "out there" theory, but at the same time, it oddly makes a little bit of sense.

Grandma raises three children, Kristina, "John" and another girl that is dying.  She takes the dying girl to the carnival to see the "boy wonder," who gives them false hope.  Out of revenge, Kristina and "John" plot their revenge.  "John" visits the carnival, meets Jane and also develops his "mentalist" abilities.  Kristina professes to be a psychic, while "John" becomes Red John.

I had forgotten that when Lorelei tried to broker RJ's offer of friendship, Jane's test was to bring to RJ Lisbon's head as a sign of friendship. That kind of stifles any notions that he left Lisbon alive in S06 E01 because he was fond of her. Yet, then he severed the head of Sophie.

I know there's a connection, just a little puzzled. Thoughts?

From some advance reviews of "The Great Red Dragon" we know that "a character that we thought was long gone" will make an unexpected return.  We also know that "a frantic Lisbon puts her trust in possibly the worst possible person".  I'm guessing that if Bertram dies or is injured in the blast, she will confide in a former superior about The List before Patrick wakes up in the hospital.  Remember from the preview, Jane is AT the hospital on the phone with Rigsby, telling him to "trust no one, especially those in law enforcement."  Perhaps Minelli or LaRoche is the person from the past?

I'd love for the person to be Kristina or Alex Jane, too.  Even the little girl from the carnival grown up (healing crystal).  I guess it just depends on what "long gone" means!

A couple pieces of info from an advance review of "The Great Red Dragon" by Americ at Happy Cool.

"There's an unexpected return of a character that we thought was long gone."

Something that happened in Season 2 is explained.

We know the next episode is "The Great Red Dragon".  Much has been made of the references to Revelation and perhaps this indicating that someone will have a "fatal wound that heals."  Up to this point, there has been a lot made of Partridge or Kirkland.  But I think in light of the promo for this episode, those who are speculating Jane releasing false info to the press is correct, that he will say someone has died who hasn't really died.  Thus the "fatal wound" will be "healed."

That may come into play with Rigsby's board and statement to the other officer, as well.  Remember Jane tells him to trust no one, especially those in law enforcement.
