Who is Red John?

Theories of fan_of_the_mentalist (26)

A few random observations.

Something bothers me about the scene in Jane's living room.  Haffner knew it was about RJ.  Yet, when PJ said so, he said he was leaving.  Why?  If it's him, perhaps the others don't know his identity, even though my bet is on McAllister.  Still, it doesn't make sense.

I do believe RJ is trying to kill off the other 6 on PJ's list.  For what purpose?

One thing that narrows it down for me is that the actor playing the Young Man bears a strong resemblance to Haffner and McAllister.

Another clue I believe we've been feed concerns coffee.  Smith likes his with cream and sugar and Haffner, black.  Anyone else know about the others and how this might tie in?  It was certainly done on purpose.  (I am hesitant to say this, but Carmen Lee can be an anagram for 'lean creme'  -- makes me either think coffee or uniform).

Does anyone else think that perhaps Roy Tagliaferro might be a disciple of RJ, as well as Jay Roth?  Or must they be RJ?

I previously mentioned the song MacArthur Park, Lisbon's 'happy memory'.  SPOILER: we know Jane kills PJ in a park.  We know the song is a metaphor about a relationship that is crumbling, that took a lot of time to build ("the cake out in the rain").  I think it alludes to the demise of RJ, because in the TV guide it is stated that RJ wants a relationship with Patrick.  Not all of the suspects do.

Well, those are my random thoughts. Hopefully, there will be answers soon!

A few observations about the Fire and Brimstone tattoo reveal scene:

Watch it again and keep your eyes on McAllister the whole time.  You'll notice he's very controlled.  Keeps his arms crossed when PJ says 'one of you is RJ' (after covering his face with his hands...to smile, perhaps?).  ALSO has same stance when PJ says one has a tattoo, no change of countenance, and he KNOWS he has the tattoo.  So, same face with both accusations.
When Haffner stands and PJ gets his gun, McAllister is motioning with his hands very calmly.  He then tries to calm "Patrick" down with words.
Some have said RJ wouldn't deny being who he is, but wouldn't you deny it to keep the game going?  If he's found out right there, PJ kills him, game over.  Also seems to me the writer would WANT the most dramatic tattoo reveal to be the real RJ.
Notice how Haffner and McAllister share a knowing glance as they're removing their shirts.  As do the 3.  Stiles protects McAllister from being shot by PJ.
But perhaps the most telling thing to me is McAllister's body language as he stands up and looks at Smith.  The camera angle shows just enough of his face where you can see him smiling behind Patrick's back.  Then he walks to Bertram and gives him a knowing glance.  Do the others with the tattoo know RJ's identity?  I don't know.
Bertram certainly keeps someone updated (Strawberries & Cream and
F&B phone calls to reveal PJ's plans).  If they don't know, RJ has protected his identity by making them all have the same tattoo as him.
Others have said this and I agree: the bomb is probably hidden in McAllister's hat.  He still had most of his sheriff gear on and could have hidden a detonation device in it.  I saw no other suspect with any other belongings brought into the house.  Plus, he could have another type of weapon on his uniform that might go unnoticed.

Not saying this means anything . . . but removing the letters that make up the word "Carmen L" from the word "McAllister" you have the following letters remaining:

LIST

(But there is no N in McAllister)

Someone else has probably noticed the "A-LIST-er" anomaly, too!

Someone was asking about Nick Nordella, cast as Young Man in Episodes 7 and 8. Here's a link to a twitter post where a fan posted a side-by-side of him and Xander Berkeley. Fans have also made comparisons between him and Reede Diamond. Pretty sure he IS the young RJ.

Just an observation.

If RJ in fact did bug the CBI office, I really don't see how it could be Bertram....he could VERY easily do it himself without any suspicion whatsoever.

Does anyone think it had something to do with Jane's statement about always feeling "this place is bugged, wired"?  Perhaps whoever put the PI up to it was doing it to play with Jane.  And that would mean he had been in that office when he said it.

CONTAINS SPOILERS!

Someone else today mentioned Lisbon's "happy memory" --- "the song about the cake left out in the rain" that made her think of her mother feeding pigeons (lyric: "birds like tender babies in your hands").  I wrote yesterday about the pigeon clues (Episodes 1-3) and coffee clues (4-6).  Some of these happen in a park.

Well......the song Lisbon mentioned is called MacArthur's Park
And here are the lyrics:

"Spring was never waiting for us 'til it ran one step ahead

As we followed in the dance
MacArthur's park is melting in the dark

All the sweet green icing flowing down

Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it

And I'll never have that recipe again, oh, no
I recall the yellow cotton dress foaming like a wave

On the ground beneath your knees

Birds like tender babies in your hands

And the old men playing Chinese checkers by the trees

MacArthur's park is melting in the dark

All the sweet green icing flowing down

Someone left the cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it

And I'll never have that recipe again, oh, no
MacArthur's park is melting in the dark

All the sweet green icing flowing down

Someone left my cake out in the rain

I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it

And I'll never have that recipe again, oh, no

Now, according to the spoilers from TV Guide, PJ is going to kill RJ in a park.  I think there's a connection between her "happy memory" that makes her SMILE and the pigeon clues and park clues we keep being "fed," so to speak.  Not that there's necessarily a story-line connection or some deep meaning, but that we've been fed hints that RJ will be killed in a park.
Maybe there's more, but I don't know.

And yes....I can't help but notice that MacArthur is very similar to McAllister!

Just realized something. We've discussed previously the 'pigeon clues' that appear in Episodes 1-3 of this Season.
1: in the house
2: in the park
3: in the bell tower

(For whatever it's worth, there are also birds chirping in E03 when McAllister doesn't want to look at the view or go up the ladder.)

But then in Episodes 4-6, we have had coffee clues.
4: in the park (Kirkland & Smith)
5: in the park (Cho & PI)
6: Smith (garage) & Haffner (cafe)

I'm assuming these are bread crumbs from the writers to the fans, but I can't figure out what they mean. My best guess is that they're tied to RJ, some pigeon connection & also the way he likes his coffee.
